Blue Shield of California
With all the health insurance providers in California, consumers must thoroughly research their options to determine which health insurance carrier has the best, and generally the most affordable, healthcare coverage for their individual needs. One of the leading providers of health insurance in California, Blue Shield of California has provided health insurance coverage to Californians since 1938, currently insuring several million Californians.
With a philosophy that every Californian should be able to afford healthcare, Blue Shield of California currently offers individual and family plans, Medicare-eligible plans, dental plans, Health Savings Account-eligible (HSA) plans, and the Healthy Families Program.
With millions of Americans uninsured, both across the country and in California, Blue Shield of California has publicly declared that it believes that affordable health insurance should be accessible to all Americans – regardless of their health, financial status, and age. As a result of that belief,
Blue Shield of California announced the "Universal Coverage, Universal Responsibility," initiative in 2002, the company's plan that outlines how all Americans can have access to affordable health insurance.
"Universal Coverage, Universal Responsibility" asserts that financial responsibility for health insurance should be a collaborative effort that is undertaken by the government, employers, and individuals. Additionally, “Universal Coverage, Universal Responsibility" encourages honesty about the cost of implementing universal health coverage.
In an effort to bring affordable healthcare to all Americans, Blue Shield of California has actively lobbied at both a state and national level to work toward developing a plan that will allow health insurance coverage for everyone in the United States.
Because it believes that all Americans should have health coverage, Blue Shield of California created the Healthy Families Program, which provides coverage for eligible children from birth to age 19. In addition to income requirements, for children to qualify for the Healthy Families Program, they must be residents of California, citizens of the United States, United States nationals, or qualified immigrants. Among the services that the Healthy Families Program currently covers are immunizations, lab work, doctor's visits, X-rays, hospital stays, and prescription medication.
Additionally, Blue Shield of California offers its members access to health management programs, such as the Alere Heart Failure Program, the Joint Arthritis Education Program, the Reach Your Peak Asthma Self-Management Program, and the Shield Your Heart Coronary Artery Disease Management Program.
Members of Blue Shield of California also have access to extensive pharmacy services. For example, members can ask questions of pharmacists from the University of California, San Francisco, can go online to determine if there are any interactions with their prescribed drugs, or locate a pharmacy close to home. Blue Shield of California members can also order their prescription drugs online through Express-Scripts, a service that fills prescription drugs and sends them to members through the mail.
Blue Shield of California also offers a comprehensive Web site where members, and in some instances non-members, can initiate a live chat with a nurse, check for prescription drug interactions, and research an array of medical topics in the online health library.
Blue Shield of California is accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, holding the status of "Excellence," and has received countless awards for both its service and products.
