Medicare is designed to provide those who are eligible – including seniors who are 65 and older, those disabled individuals who are younger than 65, and individuals dealing with end-stage kidney failure – with federal health insurance to cover their medical costs. And while Medicare recently added a new plan, "The Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan," that helps defray the cost of prescription drugs, Medicare still often fails to cover all of the healthcare costs of those it covers.

Members of a Blue Shield of California Medicare Supplement Plan also have a choice of how they pay their monthly premiums. One of the easiest ways to pay for monthly or quarterly premiums is to allow Blue Shield of California to automatically charge the member's credit card. Or, members can authorize Blue Shield of California to automatically deduct the monthly or quarterly charges from their checking or savings account.
Another of the key benefits of Blue Shield of California's Medicare Supplement Plan is members have access to Blue Shield's Lifeplan Resources. Lifeplan Resources allow members to take advantage of numerous health and wellness programs. Among the health and wellness programs offered through Lifeplan Resources are: discounts on routine eye care; the ability to contact a nurse with any medical questions or worries 24 hours a day; and the option of asking questions or voicing concerns with a nurse in an online chat.
Lifeplan Resources also provides members with guidance before and after surgery through the Pre-surgical Guided Imagery Program. Members also have full access to Blue Shield of California's health management programs, including programs that focus on arthritis, diabetes, and congestive heart failure.
In addition to the Medicare Supplement Plans, Blue Shield of California also has several Medicare HMO health insurance plans. However, those HMO plans are currently limited to certain areas of California, including Orange County, the majority of Los Angeles County, San Francisco County, and designated portions of San Bernardino County and Riverside County.
Blue Shield of California also has several Medicare Prescription Drug Plans – including the Blue Shield Medicare RX Enhanced Plan and the Blue Shield Medicare RX plan – from which members can choose to help defray the often-high costs of prescription drugs.
Californians can enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan regardless of whether they also enroll in one of Blue Shield of California's Medicare Supplement Plans.
