Blue Cross of California Medicare Supplement Plans

Countless Californians count on Medicare to help pay for their medicals costs. A federal health insurance plan, Medicare is designed for those Americans who are 65 and older, individuals dealing with end-stage kidney failure, and eligible disabled individuals of all ages.

There are two parts to Medicare: Part A and Part B. Medicare Part A partially covers hospital stays and "skilled nursing" facilities while Medicare Part B pays for doctor fees, outpatient hospital visits, and other designated medical expenses.

Unfortunately, in most instances, Medicare coverage isn't sufficient enough to cover all of a patient's medical services, often leaving patients with large medical bills. As a result, monthly premium. A general rule of thumb with Blue Cross's Medicare Supplement Plans is: You'll pay more for the most comprehensive plans than you will for less comprehensive coverage.

Blue Cross of California also offers several Medicare Advantage Plans, including:
Blue Cross Freedom Blue PPO.
Available to all eligible Californians, the Blue Cross Freedom Blue PPO plan allows members to choose which doctors they see, and referrals aren't necessary when a specialist is needed.

Blue Cross Senior Secure HMO
The main feature of the Blue Cross Senior Secure HMO is the fact that members do not have to pay a monthly premium for their health insurance. While the Senior Secure HMO is limited to Californians in certain Southern California counties, it offers members dental, podiatry, and vision care.

Blue Cross Smart Saver
Available statewide, the Blue Cross Smart Saver is a Medical Savings Account (MSA) plan that allows members to choose their own doctors and hospitals. Members do not pay a monthly premium, and when Medicare doesn't cover the full cost of treatments or service, they may use the MSA funds to pay for many of those costs.

It's important to note that monthly premiums and co-pays with HMO plans often depend on where in California members live.

Blue Cross of California also offers Medicare-eligible dental plans, prescription drug plans, and life benefits in addition to Medicare Supplement Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans.

Finally, Blue Cross of California recommends doing ample research before purchasing health insurance to supplement your Medicare coverage. For example, if you have other health insurance policies, review them thoroughly to determine whether or not you actually need to purchase supplemental health insurance. Low income Californians are also encouraged to check into Medicaid and to contact the state to determine if there is any other financial assistance available to them to help cover their medical costs.
